If you’ve ever received packaging that didn’t turn out the way you expected, you’re not alone. Most issues don’t happen because anyone is “wrong”—they usually come from incomplete specs or misaligned expectations between a brand and the print shop.

This article covers the most common problems entrepreneurs face, and how to communicate clearly so your packaging turns out right—faster, with fewer revisions and extra costs.

1) The printed color doesn’t match what you see on screen
What happens: Colors look dull, shift from batch to batch, or the logo color doesn’t match your brand.

Common causes
  • Artwork is submitted in RGB instead of CMYK
  • No standard color reference (Pantone/Spot)
  • No proofing or reference sample before production

One sentence to fix it:
“I need the logo color to match our brand as closely as possible, and I’d like to approve a proof before mass production.”

2) The box doesn’t feel premium—even with a good design
What happens: Printing looks fine, but the box feels thin, cheap, or the surface doesn’t look refined.

Common causes

  • Paper type/thickness isn’t suitable for the product
  • Wrong coating choice (e.g., glossy when a clean premium look is needed)
  • No finishing that elevates the brand

One sentence to fix it:
“I want a clean, premium look—please recommend the right paper and finishing to achieve that feel.”

3) The box size is off (too tight or too loose)

What happens: The box won’t close properly, the product gets scratched, or it moves inside.

Common causes
  • Measuring only the main body and forgetting the cap/pump/seal
  • Not allowing for paper thickness and folding tolerances

One sentence to fix it:
“Please calculate the dieline based on the actual product size, with allowance for caps/seals and paper thickness.”

4) Text looks blurry, thin lines break, or details aren’t sharp

What happens: Small text is hard to read, lines look jagged, or edges aren’t crisp.

Common causes
  • Low-resolution artwork
  • Text too small for print standards
  • Foil/UV finishing causing fine details to drop out

One sentence to fix it:
“There’s small text—please check readability before printing and advise the minimum safe font size.”

5) Dieline/cutting is misaligned (logo shifts, white edges appear)

What happens: The cut looks skewed, borders are uneven, or white edges show on one side.

Common causes
  • No bleed or insufficient bleed
  • Logo placed too close to the edge
  • Safe zone not considered

One sentence to fix it:
“Please check the bleed and safe zone before die-cutting to prevent the logo from being trimmed.”

6) The real box doesn’t match the mockup
What happens: The mockup looks great, but the real output feels different.

Common causes
  • Mockups use studio lighting and idealized textures
  • No real paper/finishing samples reviewed before finalizing specs

One sentence to fix it:
“I’d like to see real material/finishing samples—or similar finished work—before confirming the final specs.”

7) Production takes longer than expected

What happens: Deadlines slip, and you miss a product launch.

Common causes
  •  Multiple artwork revisions
  • Finishing/die-cut requires new tooling
  • Production queue doesn’t match your timeline

One sentence to fix it:
“I have a fixed deadline—please confirm the production timeline and delivery date before I proceed.”

8) The cost increases because specs change mid-way
What happens: The quote starts within budget, then grows after adding foil/UV/thicker paper.

Common causes
  •   Not knowing pricing is split by processes
  • Adding too many finishing options without comparing value

One sentence to fix it:
“Please provide 2–3 options within my budget—Standard / Premium / Signature—so I can compare value.”

9) The box looks great but fails in shipping
What happens: Corners crush, boxes dent, or fragile products break.

Common causes
  • Structure isn’t suitable for product weight
  • No inner tray/insert protection
  • Paper is too thin

One sentence to fix it:
“My product is heavy/fragile—please recommend a structure + insert + material suitable for shipping.”

Summary: Clear specs = faster, smoother, and more accurate results
Many entrepreneurs lose time and money on revisions simply because the specs weren’t aligned from the beginning.
